Prior to the Spaniards colonising Central America t’isil (vanilla in Mayan) was cultivated throughout the land. Bees were kept for sweetener. And all the fruits in this recipe can still be found growing wild in the forests of Central America (though their appearance is quite different than the cultivated varieties most of us are familiar with).
