The Caribbean Island of Haiti was colonised by the Spanish and then the French in the 16th and 17th centuries. During that time thousands of slaves were brought over from West Africa to work in the cane fields and farms. Naturally along with them came their tribal beliefs which chiefly centred around ancestor worship. These early practices are called Vodun, and they are still practiced by thirty million people in Africa .
